HID's for Motorbikes - The DfT official answer..
« on: November 05, 2009, 17:38:28 »
From the DfT - Transport Technology and Standards

 My Question:

 Hi

I am looking for some advice on after market HID's for motorbikes. I
 have found the following url
 http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps which makes it
clear that they are not legal as an aftermarket modification; for
cars. However it does not mention motorbikes. I have been told the
restrictions are not for motorbikes or vehicles over 3.5 Tonnes.

If possible I would like conformation on this to ensure my vehicle
 complies with any regulations.

 Best wishes

 Mike

 Answer

Dear Mr Duncan

The rules for replacement headlamps for motorcycles are similar to those for motor vehicles.

Therefore, a motorcycle can only be fitted with HID headlamps if it was type approved with that style of headlamp.

 Yours sincerely

But a copper on another forum says:

The Dft and VOSA have two different takes on this, and neither are legally binding.

The Road Traffic Act does not deem them illegal for fitment provided they are correctly alligned and do not cause dazzle.

Type approval for motorcycles fitted as standard with HID systems do not require self levelling or a cleaning system (see BMW K1300GT), neither do goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes MGW or PCV's with more than 8 seats.

So, I am still not sure. But for some reason I am leaning towards this answer,
